Ozone: What is it and how can you use it to promote your health?

First discovered during the 1800s, ozone is, molecularly speaking, a combination of three oxygen atoms. Due to the chemistry behind this substance, which is often in gaseous form, ozone is unstable in certain conditions. Most notably, it is understood to be the part of the atmosphere that protects the earth from ultraviolet radiation; however, there are ways that ozone can actually assist you in protecting your health.

Understanding Ozone Therapy

Ozone therapy is the process of using ozone to improve well-being. In fact, there are several different ways in which this therapy can be used to create a positive change in your health, including its role as a disinfectant, as a wound treatment, to purify drinking water, as an antibacterial, as an anti-inflammatory and as a treatment for over 100 different diseases - including HIV, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, macular degeneration, interstitial cystitis, chronic hepatitis, diabetes, herpes and more.

But there is more to ozone therapy than fighting disease. Many supporters of alternative and preventative medicine have adopted this approach to help increase overall well-being. This is because ozone has been shown to improve the activity of the immune system, enhance the ability of the body to use oxygen, stimulate the release of growth factors that are involved in the regeneration of damaged tissue and reduce chronic pain.

The Full Picture

The many benefits of ozone therapy are quite clear, and papers have been written that relay the findings of various scientific studies, cited in the sources below, that have reinforced the idea that ozone therapy is a wonderful option for many people. But, as with any form of medical treatment - alternative or otherwise - it is important that you understand the risks before making the decision to use this resource.

One of the risks associated with this form of therapy is damage to the body's cells. Changes in the ability of substances to travel into and out of cells can interfere with the body's ability to function effectively. Additionally, using ozone from polluted air can be toxic, and injecting ozone can lead to blood clots and other potentially fatal side effects. While these are rare occurrences and no doctor would recommend the intravenous use of ozone, it is important to note that the benefits of ozone therapy need to be studied a bit further before the medical community can definitively decide whether or not to label this method of treatment as safe.

Making the Right Decision for You

Weighing all of these factors can be overwhelming, as ozone therapy is not a treatment that is widely understood or used. This is not to say, though, that it cannot provide you with health benefits. Many professionals, both in alternative and traditional medical practices, use ozone therapy to help their patients achieve a higher degree of wellness. It is up to you to speak with your doctor and determine if this is a good way to address your unique health needs.
