Canada - Hundreds of Hells Angels members are expected to descend on Langley this weekend for an annual event intended to "intimidate the public," according to police.

RCMP are expecting "several hundred" Hells Angels members and associates from across Canada and possibly the U.S. who will come to Langley this weekend for an annual event known as the Canada Run, said Sgt. Lindsey Houghton of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit.

"Any time Hells Angels get together, they get together for one reason only: that's to remind the public that they exist and to intimidate the public. Make no mistake," said Houghton.

The event is expected to take place at the White Rock chapter clubhouse which is located on an acreage in Langley. Police said that over the course of the weekend, the gathering will be monitored by Langley RCMP, Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, and partner agencies.

The get-together also comes amid reports the motorcycle gang is planning to open a clubhouse in Surrey.

In January, Surrey RCMP Chief Superintendent Bill Fordy released a statement saying that he had "personally met with a local chapter president of the Hells Angels to discourage their establishing a chapter in Surrey."

On Tuesday, RCMP did not confirm whether a new clubhouse was close to opening in Surrey.

Langley Mayor Jack Froese said he was informed of this weekend's event by Langley RCMP Supt. Derek Cooke a few weeks ago. They don't anticipate any problems, Froese said, other than possible traffic delays.

"They'll have their meetings, a BBQ, whatever they do, and then they'll leave again," said Froese, a former VPD officer.
