Australia - AN ALLEGED member of the Red Devils bikie gang has appeared in court after an alleged extortion attempt overnight.

Ahamad Merheby, 27, appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court facing two counts of threatening to inflict serious injury.

He has also been charged with unlawful imprisonment.

Mr Merheby was arrested in South Morang about 9.30 last night.

Police allege Mr Merheby met his alleged victim in Thomastown to discuss a $10,000 debt.

It is believed a text message from Mr Merheby to the alleged victim told him: "This is what they want. I don't know why. You better make them happy."

It is believed the men were then approached by four people who made demands of them.

Police allege they then travelled to the victim's South Morang, home where a $70,000 2009 HSV was taken in lieu of the debt.

Police did not oppose a bail application made by lawyer Rob Melasecca on behalf of Mr Merheby.

But he must adhere to strict conditions, including payment of a $100,000 surety.

He has also been banned from entering South Morang and must report to police three times a week.

He has also been banned from associating with any member of the Red Devils or Hells Angels.

Mr Merheby will return to court in September.
